Guns, Germs, and Steel
by Jared Diamond is a fascinating documentation of the impact of these 3 things in cultural evolution. While Diamond overlooks the cyclical nature of culture in favor of a linear worldview, it's still an important book.

The Dying of the Trees
by Charles Little is a thoroughly documented, totally readable book about how we're killing off the lungs of our planet.

The Chalice and the Blade
by Riane Eisler was one of the first "big" books to talk about "cooperator" or "leaver" or "Older" cultures. Brilliant!

World War III
by Michael Tobias is about the "war" humans are waging on our biosphere, and how it may ultimately end up destroying us.

The Case Against the Global Economy
by Mander & Goldsmith is a collection of essays that point out the difference between "global trade" and "internationalization." Very good for econ-interested folks!
